FAQ
Frequently asked questions
The quick answers. For the long versions, every topic page on the site starts with a question just like these.
Asking and applying
Does asking Mr a question affect my credit score?
No. There's no credit check when you first enquire. A credit check is only discussed once you decide to go ahead with an application, and you'll know before it happens.
Will my details be sent to lots of lenders?
No. We don't spray enquiries around. One specialist looks at your situation, rings you, and works out where it fits before your details go anywhere.
Who will I actually talk to?
A real lending specialist who has read your enquiry. Mr is the friendly face of the website; the conversation is with a person.
Why do you ask me to fill in the form accurately?
Because the amount, purpose, property position, trading history and tax situation decide which options fit. Accurate answers mean the first option we raise is one that can actually go through.
Do you publish interest rates?
No. Every business loan is priced on its circumstances — security, credit history, term, amount and purpose. We'll show you real figures for your situation before you commit.
What we can help with
How much can a New Zealand business borrow?
Property-secured business loans range from $20,000 to $5,000,000. Unsecured and cash-flow options for trading businesses are typically $5,000 to $500,000, sized on turnover and bank statements.
Is this for personal or home loans?
No. Everything we arrange is for business purposes only. Property, including your home, can be used as security, but the money must be for the business.
Can I get a business loan with bad credit?
Often. Bad credit is considered case by case. What happened, how long ago, whether it's resolved and whether property security is available all matter.
Can I get a business loan if I owe IRD?
Often, yes — clearing IRD debt is one of the most common reasons owners borrow. Filed returns, a known myIR balance and a plan such as an instalment arrangement help a lot.
Do I need to own property?
No. Trading businesses can use unsecured options. Property opens up larger amounts and helps when trading history is short or credit has marks.
Your business
Can sole traders borrow?
Yes. Sole traders, partnerships, companies and trusts can all borrow for business purposes. Structure changes the paperwork and who signs, not whether you can ask.
How long do I need to be trading?
Unsecured lenders generally want enough history to see steady income in your bank statements, often six months or more. Property-secured lending can sometimes help newer businesses.
What documents will I need?
Usually photo ID, six months of business bank statements and an IRD statement from myIR. Bigger loans add financial statements and GST returns; property loans add title, rates, insurance and mortgage details.
Can I use a property owned by my family trust?
Often, if the trustees agree, the trust deed allows it and the trustees get independent legal advice. It's more paperwork, not a closed door.
Tax and timing
When is GST due?
By the 28th of the month after your taxable period ends, except the period ending 31 March (due 7 May) and the period ending 30 November (due 15 January).
What's an instalment arrangement?
An agreement with Inland Revenue to pay overdue tax in regular amounts. You can apply in myIR. One you're keeping to usually reassures lenders.
